CLAT 2010: analysis and expected cut-off

No, no one felt like this guy in the picture today.

CLAT 2010 paper was mostly predictable (some recent observations can be read here), a little unpredictable on some counts too. Like I have maintained all along, English and Maths sections were really easy. Logical reasoning was mostly easy, except for the critical reasoning questions (strong/weak arguments, premises-inferences and so on) which are always tricky, and Legal Aptitude had GK type questions which tested knowledge of law. The majority of my students rated GK and Legal Aptitude (which we can call legal GK, mostly concepts) as tough. Before a detailed analysis of each section, here are the general aspects of the paper:

  1. There was no time constraint as there were 90 GK or GK type questions (including legal aptitude) out of total 200 questions
  2. Legal Reasoning was shifted to logical reasoning, only 5 questions for 1 mark each.
  3. Most people could finish the paper at leisure, so what mattered is whether you knew the right answer or not.
  4. Unlike last years paper, questions were original. So no one studying a particular book or at a particular coaching will benefit in an unfair manner.
  5. Over-all, paper was easy. Tested knowledge more than aptitude for reasoning.
Those who prepared for a long time and worked hard will benefit from this paper. Nevertheless, those who prepared for a month also have a decent chance as GK and Legal GK did not give huge lead to those who prepared for these topics for a long time as they had expected.
  6. Out of those who prepared well and found the paper mostly easy, those who made lesser mistakes will go to the top ranked law schools.
  7. Don't worry about the off beat GK questions. All students were caught unprepared, and I can understand why. Even quiz masters don't ask about the birth year of Gautam Buddha any more. What would matter is how you fared in the rest of the paper.

You can see some of the questions here, posted by Dipti. Add any other questions that you can remember so that we have a better idea about the complete paper and maybe I'd be able to predict the cut-offs more specifically then.

English: No tough vocabulary, as predicted. Spelling, grammar based fill in the blanks, idioms, parajumbles, even direct identification of parts of speech. There were 10 questions on comprehension. Most basic preparation would suffice for this section. Even students from vernacular mediums will have a fair chance if they prepare over the long term for this paper. A good score would be 35. Scoring 40 was possible as time was not an issue. Not much different from CLAT 2009 that way.

Maths: Most basic. Continued the trend since last year. Some students said it was easier than last year, (I don't know how that can be possible!) and I am afraid the majority will score 20 out of 20. Just pray that you didn't make silly mistakes.

Logical Reasoning: I expected a bit tougher logical questions, especially from analytical reasoning, puzzles type questions. While these questions turned up, they were simple. The standard was raised in the critical reasoning questions, and general impression is that this was an easy section. Legal reasoning was also asked, but these questions were a bit on the tougher side. Criminal law (theft/ abatement), Torts, Family law principles turned up. 30 will keep you in the competiton, 40 will be a very good score.

GK: This section was difficult to score in, but that is how GK section is supposed to be. If you are getting 30 correct here, that's awesome. Current affairs was neglected in favour of static GK. Those who read Pearson or similar books would have benefited. I also hope you kept an eye on the GK section that comes in Pratiyogita Kiran or Pratiyogita Darpan which I have been advising from the beginning of the year.

Legal Aptitude: This surprised most students. Most questions were conceptual questions, needed knowledge of law. Basic Reading Materials/Modules certainly helped – and this is where those who went to coachings will clearly benefit. Questions came from a range of legal subjects, including the obvious ones like torts, contracts, criminal law, family law to more unusual subjects, like intellectual property law, environmental law, taxation, forensic sciences. If you read those last minute supplements I wrote for IMS (was available on myIMS section of the website), you must have been thanking me. Same for those who read this article here on CLAThacker. Trivia on law was not asked. No case law was asked, which is welcome and in line with what I have been telling my readers. With a good preparation, scoring 30 was possible, and with good guessing it can go up to 37-38 for some people.

Expected Cut-off:

This was a paper in which the highest score is easier to guess than the cut -off for the top three colleges. I am expecting a highest score in the range of 160-165. However, You can hope for getting top three law schools with any score slightly above 140. To feel absolutely safe about getting NLS Bangalore, I would want to score 150 on this paper.

  4. Hi,
Could you please rank the top colleges and mention the reasons, so that we can take a decision once the results are out.

  5. The comments are excellent with the write up on the issue. I expect a top score in the range of 170-175 in place of 160-165.
For admission to top 3-4 univ such as Banglore, hyderabad, bhopal and kolkata, i believe the min marks required is 150..not even a single marks lesser than this. regards, Anubhav

  10. If I get marks between 134 - 146, will I get admission in any one of the law college.

  11. Nirma is offering admission on CLAT. In case, i do not get admission into NLU through CLAT - what are the possibilities of getting admission in Nirma law School with 134 CLAT score

  12. cut off migt be 195........nd my scor will be 199......will i get any laww cllg by this marks.......

  13. @cat, you would get good law schools with a score of 140 - you ,ay have to wait till all the lists are out. u shall definitely get nirma, not much competition there.

    ReplyDelete
  14. @Ramanuj - many thanks. In case, you are suggesting 140 in top 5 then, even at 134 - I may get at any of the III tier law college.

  15. @ramanuj
are u kidding me?! cut offs at 150-160 is reasonable and a score of 180 is gettable. not that im expecting nething close to such heights but i think 180-185 as score is highly possible. the only problem as such were gk if ur prep wasnt rigorous, n legal if uve been chasing amendments and landmark cases..

  16. I know - Nirma is new and perhaps UPES, Amity, Symbiosis are much preferred option. These three can give more placement possibility, as I could understand from the surfing.

@vakshay - last year when paper was easier the cutoff was bit higher. Now with random paper pattern - CLAT 2010 cutoff will fall.

  17. How much NLU Orissa cutoff can be. It was 87 or so last year. How many students appeared in this. I suppose lots of students must have appeared from Delhi, Calcutta, Orissa and Bihar.
If NLU Delhi students count was 6500, then NLU Orissa may not exceed 2000.

    ReplyDelete
  18. @cat
pls explain wat exactly u mean by 'random'. i dont see much difference betwn clat 2010 n 2009..
nlu orissa was pretty much similar to last years..if not a lil bit tougher. i dont expect cutoffs to go beyond 85-93. i agree with ur 2000 estimate

    ReplyDelete
  19. @Vakshay - pattern for GK and legal GK was bit different. Tougher than last year. Yes, maths was much easier.
NLU Orissa - IMO cutoff may not exceed the last year of 87. Since, not many prefer NLUO over Symbiosis / others (and CLAT cutoff may go much lower than last year) - cutoff for NLUO may even go lower.

Any idea about preferences amongst Symbiosis, Amity, UPES, NLUO and Nirma? I presume - it will be Symbiosis, UPES (for their specialization courses), Amity, NLUO and Nirma.
In case, CLAT cutoff is 135 (for 3rd tier) - what could be Nirma Cutoff?

  20. @cat
i dont knw man..i believe clat will still see the cutoff at 150-160. gk was 'hatke' and not tough as such. guys whove diligently read the hindu n pratiyogita darpans wud easily laugh thru the gk. legal gk was cake for neone who has done his coaching text. wer talking bout an all india test here..surely therel be atleast 100 guys whodve adopted such a technique. these guys, along wid other more than decent performers will raise the cutoff.

symbi..it has good industrial linkages. infact its renowned for it. but they dont have a very rigorous program. it helps immensely if uve got that drive bcuz otherwise u might end up doing helluva lotta things but law there. plus the bba incentive is worth reckoning. ul be studying law n bba for 3 yrs(wich wud be a lil too engaging) but after 3 yrs if u dont feel like doing law n wanna sit fr mba or sumthing, u have the option to leave n ul gt that bba degree.
amity is euphemistically a means for a dropyear.
upes is good. but then at the end o 5 years ur still gonna be a law graduate. it wud be a mistake to think that one wud instantly becum some kinda technocrat.

  22. @vakshay - the only reason there was a surge in cut off last year was because a large number of questions were copied from universals, which is read by each and every one. i dont see anyone scoring 180 ;)

160 is way too high for a cut off even for NLS. thats what i'd say from my experience. Even for NLUD I have been told my cut off is too low and LST put it at 115. now you are saying 160? the competition is not that high in CLAT yet :D

  25. @vakshay--A cut-off of 160 for NLS dis year...U hve got to be kidding me,man!!!Last year, the paper was crap....it just needed a mugging up of dat Universal guide...U canot compare CLAT 09 wid CLAT-10...

As for the expected cut-offs on dis website,I did not belive the cut-offs dat had bin predicted for NLU-Delhi by Mr. Rammanauj.Need I say,I was wrong...
